The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reaffirmed the crucial role of Nigerians in the diaspora in advancing the nation’s foreign policy and development goals, noting that their impact extends beyond financial remittances. During a working visit to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) headquarters in Abuja, he praised the resilience and dedication of NIDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in building the commission over the past six years despite various challenges.
The visit formed part of the government’s performance bond framework, which outlines measurable targets for ministries and agencies, and highlighted the administration’s “four Ds” policy approach aimed at achieving strategic autonomy.
Meanwhile, Dabiri-Erewa expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit, describing it as timely and essential for deepening collaboration. She emphasised that Nigerians living abroad serve as key ambassadors and play a significant role in the country’s economic growth, contributing over $20 billion annually through remittances. She called for stronger engagement with the diaspora community to maximise their potential in nation-building.
The NIDCOM chairman also outlined key achievements of the commission, including the passage of the National Diaspora Policy, which is due for review next year, and the creation of the Diaspora Data Mapping Portal to register Nigerians abroad. She encouraged citizens to enrol through the portal or at embassies, stressing the importance of accurate data in responding to emergencies and enhancing government outreach.
Dabiri-Erewa further acknowledged the positive economic and social impact of returning Nigerians, particularly during festive seasons, and expressed optimism that the partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would strengthen under the current administration. She reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the contributions of Nigerians abroad continue to shape the country’s image and development trajectory.
