Chekwas Okorie, founding chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has warned against moves to increase salaries of political office holders, calling it reckless and insensitive.
Speaking on Wednesday, Okorie said the proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) could provoke serious anger among Nigerians already battling economic hardship.
He said:
“The hunger in this country is real. People are suffering from the very policies made by these politicians. Talking about increasing their pay now is like mocking the citizens.”
Okorie added that instead of a pay rise, RMAFC should be considering a cut in politicians’ allowances.
