A bill to reserve parliamentary seats for women will be voted on in October, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has confirmed.
Kalu told women’s groups and civil society organisations that the proposal — part of a wider constitutional amendment package — is crucial to address the shockingly low 3.8% female representation in the House of Representatives and just four women in the Senate.
He urged campaigners to ramp up lobbying of political, religious and community leaders before the vote, and called on parties, media and civil society to do more to support female candidates.
